Ernest O'Bryan - 1920-2008
Ernest A. O'Bryan, 88, of Ashland, passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 20, 2008, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.
Mr. O'Bryan was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Albert and Erie Alley O'Bryan. His first wife of 44 years, Ruby Nickell O'Bryan, and his second wife, Virginia Green Hogg, preceded him in death.
Ernest served proudly with the United States Army during the World War II European Theater of Conflict, receiving a Bronze Star Medal for actions above and beyond the call of duty. He was a mechanic with National Mine Service Co., a member and deacon of 39th Street Baptist Church and a member of the Boyd County Senior Center, where he served as treasurer for many years, enjoying calling bingo and wood carving.
Ernest was a kind and gentle man dearly loved by family and friends alike. He truly will be missed.
He leaves behind his loving family: his daughters, Marilyn (Ken) Cavin of Ashland and Sandra (Donnie) Riggs of Flatwoods; a nephew whom he raised as a son, William "Billy" (Betty) Nickell of Ashland; a stepson, Larry Hogg of Ashland; a stepdaughter, Doris (Jack) Bear of Ashland; a sister, Rosalie Vallandingham of Moberly, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Mark (Kelli) O'Bryan of Ashland, Jeff (Jennifer) Cavin and Craig (Stephanie) Cavin, all of Bufford, Ga., Kelli Cavin and her fiancé, Bobby, of Ashland, Stephanie (Craig) Royster of Greenup, Jeremey (Jennifer) Riggs of Flatwoods, Robin (Ray) Reynolds and Kristie (Ronnie) Henderson, all of Olive Hill; and 13 precious great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were a son, Arthur Ray O'Bryan; three brothers, Chester O'Bryan, Curtis O'Bryan and Oliver O'Bryan; and a sister, Amanda Coffman.
A funeral service in remembrance and honor of Ernest O'Bryan will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Brother Dewey McCarty and Brother Tiny Breeding. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to 39th Street Baptist Church, 732 39th St., Ashland, KY 41101.
