Gary Harmon

August 14, 1944 — January 8, 2012

Gary Eugene Harmon, 67, of Flatwoods, went into the Lord's arms on Jan. 8, 2012, in King's Daughters Medical Center after a series of long-term illnesses.

He was born in Livingston County, Pontiac, Ill.

After the death of his parents, he lived with his sisters. He graduated from Hammond Tech High School in Hammond, Ind., in 1962 and joined the Army the same year, serving in BTYR "C" MSI BN (N-H) 43rd Artillery Aerdcom. After an honorable discharge, he moved to Ashland with a fellow serviceman and friend, Don Bradley. In 1965, he made the Ashland area his home. He married his wife of 38 years, Mona Elizabeth "Libby" Cordial Harmon, who preceded him in death.

He loved to play bluegrass and country music and could sing very well. Golf, baseball and football were his favorite hobbies, as well as coaching Little League baseball. He was retired from the Armco Coke Plant and a member of the union's OCAW for 35 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 325 and AMVETS Post 95.

He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James and Dora Harmon and John and Sara Mossburger; his parents, Clyde and Geneive Harmon; four brothers, Dennis, James, Linden and Don; and a sister, Daffney.

He is survived by his sisters, Patti McWhorter of South Beloit, Ill., and Gwen Garagano of Crown Point, Ind.; and two sons, Mike and Tim of Flatwoods.

Gary was a wonderful person and a great joy to have in all of our lives. He will be sadly missed. God is our strength and refuge.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 at Carman Funeral Home in Russell. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
