Hazel Jane Damron (1920-2010)
Hazel Jane Damron was at home with her family gathered around as she peacefully slipped from this life Thursday morning, April 1, 2010. She was a born again, spirit filled Christian of the Pentecostal faith and is now in the presence of the Lord. She was born July 30, 1920, in Pike County, Ky. to the late Rueben Prater and Fannie Dotson Prater Barnett.
Hazel was a singer/song writer, recording in Nashville, a poet and artist, having poems published and award-winning paintings. Always a friend to the downtrodden, Hazel was an example of love and faith to her family and a woman after God's own heart.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Damron; her stepfather, Richard Barnett; a daughter, Sandy Mauk; and three brothers, Robert Taylor, Paul Barnett and Dick Barnett.
Hazel and the late Bill Damron raised 6 beautiful children, Cheri McCormick and husband Tom of Flatwoods, Billy Damron and wife Nancy of Russell, Janie Woods and husband John of Ashland, Jack Damron and wife Carol of Rockmart, Ga. and Ginger Simpson and husband Rick of Ashland. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Bill Bayes, Martin Bayes, Sandra Bayes, Scott Bayes, Chuck Mauk, Tony Mauk, Rhonda Mauk Deskins, Darlene Damron Cable, Matthew Damron, Salina Damron Bryan, Amanda Roark Toler, James Roark, Joshua Woods, B.J. Damron, Rachel Simpson Manning and Ricky Simpson; and 26 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 5, 2010, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastors Mike Rice and Matthew Adams will bring a message of comfort to those in attendance. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Cemetery.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to the service time Monday at the funeral home.
