ASHLAND - Jack Russell Dunlap Sr., 91, of Ashland, went to be with his Heavenly Father and his beautiful wife of 65 years, Laura Ann Johnson Dunlap whom was his best friend and love of his life on Saturday morning, July 13, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Dunlap was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Ashland, a son of the late Robert and Ora Lee Ward Dunlap.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother and six sisters.
He was employed at the C&O Railroad for 38 years. Mr. Dunlap served his country with the U. S. Marines from Sept. 10, 1942, until Feb. 6, 1946. He was wounded in the South Pacific for which he received the Purple Heart Medal. He was a Kentucky colonel who loved to read books and listen to his gospel music and programs. He was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Church.
Survivors include his three sons, Jack Dunlap Jr. and wife, Vickki, James D. Dunlap and wife, Barb, all of Ashland, and John D. Dunlap and wife Jeanie of Galion, Ohio; and a loving daughter, Patricia Ann Dunlap Akers and husband Ted Akers of Ashland; he had eight wonderful grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
His lovely daughter Patricia Akers was by his side when he left this world to be with his Heavenly Father.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Kenova Post 93.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.
