Opal Stergeon

July 8, 1918 — July 27, 2012

Opal McDowell Stergeon, 94, of Catlettsburg, went to be with her Lord Friday, July 27, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Stergeon was born July 8, 1918, in Logan, W.Va., daughter of the late Roy and Ethel Shepard McDowell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James "Buster" Stergeon in 1984.

Opal took an active part in her children's education. She served as president of Haney School PTA. She worked with the Girl Scouts. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, she was a past Sunday School teacher and was a member of Sons at Church. Opal enjoyed working in her yard and flowers. She enjoyed traveling in their motor home and going on tours with her daughter and Jody. She graduated from Thomas R. Brown High School, and was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Midge Van Berf and Lowetta Fields; and brother, Lloyd McDowell.

Surviving are sons, James "Bubby" Stergeon, his wife, Bonnie and Gregory L. Stergeon, both of Catlettsburg; daughter, Doris J. Neal, her husband, Franklin, of Ashland. Also surviving are grandsons, Jeffery (Debbie) Neal of Richmond, Scot (Lisa) Neal of Wendell, N.C., Jim (Pam) Stergeon of Catlettsburg, and Christopher (Melaine) Stergeon of Catlettsburg; granddaughters, Elaine (Kevin) Brown of Flatwoods, Doris (George) Derifield of India, Lois (Gary) Ross of Ohio, Lynn (Greg) Newsome of Rome, Ga., Alisha (Tim) Meade of Catlettsburg, Allison (Bobby) Colegrove of Ashland, and Mitzi (Toney) Koukos of South Point, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Mysterie, Brittany, Joshton, Corey, Timmy, Apryl, Jeremy, Courtney, Nick, Erika, Audrea, Kristi, Alisa, Jessica, Casey, Josh, Kingston, Jaxson, Hannah, Zach, Tyler, Jillian, Courtney, Hunter and Tori; and great-great-grandchildren, Jackson, Dylan, Makenzie, Megan, Wyatt, Rachael, Megan, Issac, Miriam, Hunter, Gage, Peyton, Hunter, Caleb and Justin; sisters, Jewel Dillow of Ashland, Dena Thompson of Circleville, Ohio and Jean (Bob) Watts of Ashland.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at the Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Pastor Frank Hullet will officiate. Final rest in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
