Phyllis Artrip 1939-2008
Phyllis Laraine Day Artrip, 69, of Ashland, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her daughters, family and loving hands of Hospice care at Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, following a long and brave battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 24, 1939, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Charles F. Sr. and Ruth Irene Day of Ashland. She was a 1957 graduate of Ashland High School and married the love of her life the same year.
She moved away with her family to Fort Wayne, Ind., and returned to reside in Ashland again when her husband retired. She was a homemaker and also worked as a nurse aide, raised five children, helped raise four grandchildren and doted upon and cared for her great-grandchildren. Her whole life was spend in love and service to others.
She was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church in Fort Wayne and served as director of the Benevolence Committee for many years.
She was also preceded in death by her devoted husband of 47 years, Dewey Junior Artrip; her only son, Dewey Randolph Artrip; a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Hickman; and a brother, Paul Edward Day.
Survivors include three daughters, all of Ashland, Sherry (Jim) Piercy, Carolyn June Artrip and Missy (Bob Hodges) Fuller; a brother, Charles (Donna) Day of Ashland; four grandchildren, Jayshree (Justin) Patel of Ashland, Crystal (Paul David) Barry of Richmond, Ky., April (Shannon) Hobbs of Florida and D.J. Hickman of Ashland; a great-grandson, Jacob Thomas Hickman; a great-granddaughter, "the light of her life," Kastin Marie Hoffman; numerous nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Debra Ball of Wurtland; and the staff of Hospice and Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, whom she considered her family.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
There will be no visitation.
Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice Care Center, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center's social services fund.
