Raymond Adkins (1919-2008)
Raymond C. "Chigger" Adkins, 89, of Bellefonte died Saturday at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born Feb. 6, 1919, in Ashland, the son of the late Clem and Effie Higgins Adkins. He was the husband of Ann Blevins Calvert Adkins, who survives.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, the American Legion Post 76, the Elks Lodge BPOE 350, where he was twice past Elks Exalted Ruler, past district deputy to the Grand Exalted Ruler 1979-1980, Elks Sports Day honoree in 1981 and Elk of the Year in 1972. He was a graduate of Ashland High School and Ashland Junior College, where he was a standout athlete and played basketball for the Tomcats and the junior college team, and he was a high school basketball referee with over 20 years of service. He was retired from the electrical department of Armco Steel Company and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant.
He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Webb Adkins; two brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two stepsons and their wives, Tim and Yohana Calvert of Ashland and Randy and Betty Calvert of St. Louis, Mo.; four stepgrandchildren, Angie Calvert, Elizabeth Calvert, Jesse Calvert and Will Calvert.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with an Elks service at 7 p.m.
