William Hayes

William Rhoderick Hayes - 1921-2009
William Rhoderick Hayes, 87, of Ashland died Friday at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Charley, the son of the late Matt and Lydia Pack Hayes. He was a retired operator for Ashland Oil, #2 Refinery, and was a member a the Poage Masonic Lodge 325 F&AM and the Northeast Fish and Game Club. He was an Air Corp Staff Sgt. in World War II where he served as a radio operator and gunman on B-17 bombers and was awarded the bronze star. He was a member of the Grandview Church of God.
He also was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Jean Kissinger Hayes in 1994; one sister, Ivory Hayes Bradley; and two brothers, Matt D. Hayes and Irvin Hayes.
Survivors include one daughter, Rose Mary Hayes of Russell; two sons, William A. Hayes of Middlesboro and Gordon S. Hayes of Ashland; four grandchildren, Daniel L. Hayes, Tanya Marie Hayes, Heather Nicole Hayes and Jennifer Ann Hayes; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Rayann Hayes and Zoey Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Goins officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by the Kenova American Legion 93.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
